General Care and Cleaning of Stone Surfaces |
Precautions
DO use coasters under all glasses, particularly those containing alcohol or citrus juices. Many common foods contain acids that will etch or dull the surface of stone.
DO NOT place hot items directly on the stone surface. Use trivets or mats under hot dishes and placemats under china, ceramics or other objects that can scratch the surface.
Blot up spills immediately with a clean, soft cloth. Rinse with plain water and dry.
Sealer
Vanity tops and food preparation areas may need to have a penetrating sealer applied. Check with Frank. A good quality marble wax or non-yellowing automobile paste wax can be applied to minimize water spotting. In food preparation areas, be sure that it is non-toxic and safe for use in food preparation areas.
Outdoors
In outdoor pool, patio or hot tub areas, flush stone with clear water and use mild bleach solution to remove algae or moss.
Cleaning
Use a clean, soft cloth to clean surfaces along with a few drops or stone soap or mild liquid dish washing detergent and warm water. Too much soap or cleaner may leave a film. Dry with a soft cloth. Do not use scouring powders or abrasives that may scratch the stone.
In showers or other wet areas, soap scum may be minimized by using a squeegee after each use. To remove soap scum, use a non-acidic soap scum remover or a mild solution of ammonia and water (1/2 cup ammonia to one gallon of water). Frequent or over-use of ammonia may dull the stone over time.
